Why: The official word is that the plane developed mechanical trouble and was in the process of an emergency landing. On one account, the plane clipped a power line on approach to the runway and crashed. Another account says the plane struck a wooden utility pole. The plane also sheared off the valve to a sewage pipe, spewubg a geyser 25,000 gallons of raw sewage. The airport was closed. It took 45 minutes to extricate the pilot from the wreckage as sewage rained down on them. Decontamination at the scene was comprised of stripping down to their shorts and being hosed down on site.

Why: Los Rodeos control tower reported the crash. One man and a woman were rescued by helicopters from the Emergency Intervention Group. One was rescued by Air Rescue (SAR). A man who suffered leg contusions and the woman who suffered pneumothorax and a serious rib injury and were taken to University Hospital Canaria. The pilot suffered multiple serious undisclosed injuries and was transferred to the University Hospital of Our Lady of La Candelaria. Rescue efforts were hampered by fog.

This was announced last October; however, there are still going to be company job cuts across the board. In a letter to employees, Beechcraft Chairman and CEO Jim Schuster said "As a result, we are forced to substantially decrease our 2009 production levels and take the painful step of reducing our workforce accordingly. We are in the process of finalizing our plans and will notify affected employees as soon as possible."

Who: Pilot's name is not released.
Why: The pilot is missing; as the pilot was a surfer, they are hoping he is still alive, as a life raft was found. According to air traffic controllers, they found that the aircraft had dropped roughly 2,200 feet. There was no distress call made. Rescue crews found a piece of the door, a piece of the nose and a shoe.
The Preliminary NTSB report is as follows:
On January 14, 2008, at 0508 Hawaiian standard time, N410UB, a Beech 1900C, was lost from radar over the ocean about 7 miles south of the Lihue Airport, Lihue, Hawaii, located on the island of Kauai. Alpine Aviation Inc., doing business as Alpine Air, was operating the airplane as an on-demand cargo flight under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 135. The airline transport pilot was killed, and the airplane was destroyed. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and an instrument flight rules flight plan had been filed. The flight departed Honolulu International Airport, Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu, at 0443, and was destined for Lihue.
According to the operator, the pilot was making his first flight after coming off of a two day scheduled rest period. The purpose of the flight was to transfer mail to Lihue, and then the pilot was to return to Honolulu later the same day. The flight was scheduled to arrive at Lihue about 0515.
The Coast Guard indicated that debris from the airplane was initially identified floating on the ocean surface at 0848, approximately 11 miles south-southwest of the airport. The water depths in the search area were up to 800 fathoms (4,800 feet). Additional debris was identified and collected and then transported to the Coast Guard station at Lihue. The Coast Guard discontinued the search on the afternoon of January 15.
An Airport Duty Operations Controller was conducting an airport inspection while the accident airplane was approaching the airport. He recalled that he heard a pilot who identified himself as Alpine Air state that he was, "...landing 35 and 7 miles out." Airport personnel reported that the runway lights, medium intensity approach lighting system with runway alignment indicator lights (MALSR), and precision approach path indicator (PAPI) lights for runway 35, were recorded as functional at the time of the accident.
The following weather conditions were reported at Lihue Airport at 0453: wind from 030 at 23 knots with gusts to 27 knots, 10 miles visibility, cloud layers scattered at 4,100 feet and overcast at 5,500 feet, temperature 20 degrees Celsius, dew point 13 degrees Celsius, and the altimeter setting was 30.13 inches of Mercury.

Before US Airways Flight 1549 Update
- US Airways ship number N106US flew on January 13, 2009, and January 15, 2009, with the same flight number of AWE 1549 from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte Douglas [International] Airport in North Carolina.
- Multiple passengers said that on a a different day, on the SAME plane, same flight, SAME location the SAME airbus experienced a series of compressor stalls on the right engine, punctuated by some backfires or explosions, with fire coming out of the engine. Although the pilot announced an emergency landing, but he then continued on to Charlotte.
- This was confirmed by one source to be the same Airbus A-320, which is N106US.
- This prior incident could have also been caused by the engine ingesting a bird or birds. But...was it?
- This brings up two questions: Could something else have been wrong with the engines on the N106US Airbus? OR can something be done to safeguard the engine intake to prevent the vacuum from sucking birds inside?

Where: Sycamore Valley Ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley in the 6500 block of Figueroa Mountain Road.
When: Between 2 and 2:30 pm.
Why: The pilot had to land because of engine trouble. After landing, he worked on his plane, and took off again to fly the 10 miles to the airport, but the engine quit again and the plane crashed into some oak trees. The pilot sustained a scratch on his head but the plane is considered "substantial"

Who: seven passengers and two crew members
Why: The plane was landing because of a reported engine problem (an in-flight emergency when one of two turboprop engines experienced difficulty). The pilot noticed low oil pressure in the right engine; however, all four tires failed during an emergency landing at in New York. The plane landed on the main runway and stopped on four flat deflated tires at the intersection of two runways The Albany airport was closed for an hour after the landing.
Note: Tickets were sold by Air Canada, but Air Georgian operated the flight. Air Georgian president Paul Mulrooney is unsure if there was ice on the plane's brakes or if the pilot braked too heavily, causing the tires to blow out.

NTSB SENDING GO TEAM TO NEW YORK CITY FOR HUDSON RIVER AIRLINER ACCIDENT
The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a Go Team to investigate today's crash of a US Airways Airbus A-320 (N106US) into the Hudson River in New York City.
Senior Air Safety Investigator Robert Benzon has been designated as Investigator-in-Charge of the 20-member team. NTSB Member Kitty Higgins is accompanying the team and will serve as principal spokesperson for the on-scene investigation. Peter Knudson is the press officer for the investigative team.
The team will be arriving in New York this evening.

The home owners and their six year old daughter were in the house at the time and were not hurt. The homeowner helped get the people out of the wreckage. They walked on their own power to the ambulance.

Why: The helicopter was found near the Obninsk oil deposit 50 kilometres away from the city of Nefteyugansk. All those onboard were killed in the crash. pilot’s documents and samples of fuel have been taken from the scene. The autopsies of the victims and also an examination of the helicopter’s fuel are in progress. The helicopter had been hired to fkt over the company’s area oil wells. The flight was found at 23:40 local time by 3 search helicopter/rescue crews from aviation companies Convers Avia, UTair and Yugra Avia.

Missing Pilot Found and Lost Again.
The pilot who had been reported missing in our earlier report of a parachutist near Childersburg/Milton is named Marc Schrenker. When his windshield imploded, Shrenker parachuted out, leaving his unmanned plane on auto-pilot. (It crashed near Ft. Walton Beach.) He checked into a hotel under the name Jason Galoozis and slipped away to retrieve a motorcycle he'd stashed in a store room. The Childersburg police are looking for him. So is his soon to be ex-wife, AND the Securities Commission.

It now looks like Schrenker tried to fake his own death. The windshield implosion is a fairy tale. and is fleeing a divorce and officials investigating him for securities fraud.

Why: According to reportage (which may be obscured due to mistranslation) strong winds caused the aircraft's landing gear to "explode." (explode?) The plane undershot landing on runway 06, hit an airport barrier. The plane's nose, landing gears and propellers were damaged. The runway was then closed.
The plane reportedly "veered to crash into the airport's passenger lounge" but that has not been confirmed. The injured included at least one ground crew member.

Denver Crash Update

"Weather vaning where a strong crosswind pushes a plane's tail and turns the aircraft's nose into the wind, much like it turns a weather vane" is being considered as one of the causes of the Denver Crash. At the time, gusts of 37 mph were recorded. So far, the National Transportation Safety Board has cleared the plane's brakes and engines of fault. Other possible mechanical failure could still be a possibility. Other experts say a crosswind of that mph is not strong enough to have caused a problem unless ice on the runway was also a factor.

Why: The plane suffered a runway excursion at runway 34R during takeoff, slid into a ditch and caught fire after the crash. The #1 engine separated from the wing and the undercarriage collapsed. There was a 31 knot (36 mph) crosswind.
Passengers debarked on emergency slides as the plane burned. 38 people were taken to 4 Denver hospitals with injuries ranging from broken bones to bumps and bruises. Fire burned the right side of the plane. Two patients at University of Colorado Hospital initially listed in fair condition were downgraded to critical condition with fractures.
By the time the passengers had evacuated, the fire had spread inside and started melting the luggage compartments.
Debris remained on the runway, with the plane about 200 yards away and its landing gear and left engine shorn off.
The plane's first flight was 1994-05-31.It has 2 CFMI CFM56-3C1 engines.

On December 20, 2008, at 1818 mountain standard time, Continental flight 1404, a Boeing 737-500 (registration N18611), equipped with CFM56-3B1 engines, departed the left side of runway 34R during takeoff from Denver International Airport (DEN). The scheduled, domestic passenger flight, operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 121, was enroute to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Houston, Texas. There were 37 injuries among the passengers and crew, and no fatalities. The airplane was substantially damaged and experienced post-crash fire. The weather observation in effect nearest the time of the accident was reported to be winds at 290 and 24 knots with gusts to 32 knots, visibility of 10 miles, a few clouds at 4000 feet and scattered clouds at 10,000 feet. The temperature was reported as -4 degrees Celsius.

Where: Grainger County mountaintop
When: Saturday 12:20 p.m.
Who: Two people were on board. Lowell Owens and his wife, Susan, 51, both fatalities
Why: The crash is under investigation, though delayed as crews attempt to clear obstructions in the road to Clinch Mountain
Quantas Autopilot Incident Spurs Part Safety Investigation

What: Qantas Airways Airbus A330-300 en route from Perth in Western Australia to Singapore

When: Saturday December 27,
Who: The number of passengers and crew has not yet been released.
Why: The autopilot on a Qantas Airways Airbus A330 suddenly disconnected 500 kilometres after taking off. The jet was cruising at 36,000 feet when the autopilot quit. The flight successfully turned and landed in Perth.
This being the second autopilot fault, the situation is being investigated. A prior incident involving an on board system shutoff has been possibly attributed to communications interfering with aircraft onboard systems.
The ADIRU (air data inertial reference unit) is the flight computer system component about which the crew received an error message during the Dec 27 incident.

Why: A cracked windshield was the reason for the emergency landing, but passengers--although uninjured-- are apparently upset that they were not informed about the situation as it happened.
Medellin Colombia: American Airlines Boeing's Miraculous Safe Landing

What: Fully fueled American Airlines Boeing 737 flight 924 en route from Rionegro to to Miami

Who: 148 passengers
Why: Passengers heard an explosion, after which the crew was concerned that the full plane would not make it over the mountains. They turned back with a fire in one engine, and the crippled plane not climbing as it should.
The plane circled the airport for half of an hour prior to the successful emergency landing. Though successful, the landing was not uneventful as the heat from braking actually fused the brakes, leaving the plane immobile on the runway. The passengers were successfully deplaned on site via stairs and ported from the runway to the terminal by bus.
No cause has been given for the initial engine problem, but the American Airlines crew is to be commended for a near-miraculous safe-guardianship of the welfare of the passengers.
The plane was carrying thousands of pounds of fuel.

What: Taylorcraft F21 en route from Moscow to Slate Creek Idaho --Fish and Game Officer doing a fly by near rapids looking for a missing fisherman
Where: in the Salmon River near White Bird Tuesday.
When: Tuesday
Who: Cold and alive, the pilot/Idaho Fish and Game officer Paul Christensen was found downstream from the Hammer Creek recreation site and boat launch on the Salmon River.
Why: The plane's engine sputtered and went down, leaving Paul Christensen stranded in the remote winter wilderness. When radio contact was lost with the plane, search and rescue set out to look for the wreckage.

Cessna lands safely on County Road

Piper Crashes in NJ

What: Piper PA-28-140 registered to Peter Schneider
Where: Hunterdon County NJ a quarter-mile east of Alexandria Field airport in a wooded area behind a house on Mechlin Corner Road Alexandria Township.
When: Tuesday night some time after 6 pm. Troopers discovered the wreckage around 8 p.m.
Who: Pilot Peter Schneider was airlifted to St. Luke's Hospital in serious condition. Pilot/flight instructor Ronald Orton died in the crash.
Why: The plane's owner was in the process of logging hours to maintain his license when the crash occurred.
