Furthermore, even though we do not here discuss the human cost, we realize that losing anyone in an air accident is insurmountable tragedy to individuals, families and communities. Pilot and Student Emergency Landing


What: Sierra Academy of Aeronautics Cessna 152 en route from from Castle Airport in Atwater
Where: Lambing Ranch to the south west of Turlock Lake east of Waterford
When: flight left airport at 9:30 a.m. (Landing occurred 40 minutes into the lesson, and 10 miles from the nearest airport)
Who: Instructor Ken Kwan and student pilot Daniel Yang
Why: THe engine quit at 2,000 feet and falling at 500 feet/minute; and there was smoke in the cockpit. The Instructor landed the plane with no engine power. There were no injuries. After mechanics examined the plane, authorities said the plane experienced "catastrophic engine failure" when a rod went flying through the engine block.
