Cockpit Fire forces Landing in Kirksville

Who: 20-25 passenger jet was only carrying one person
Why: electrical fire in the cockpit. The electrical malfunction appeared to stem from a heated window in the cockpit, similar to a defrosting window on a car. The failure caused the plane’s windshield to smoke and burn.

Hong Kong flight Grounded In Chicago

Beechcraft Lands on New York Highway

Why: While a student was flying, the engine started clicking; then there was an explosion and a power loss. The instructor landed on the highway's center lane with minima. clearance of surrounding guardrails. Flight instructor Michael Denning has gotten significant accolades for his skilled response.

Emergency Landing in KY

Where: In a field next to the Kroger grocery store and Burger King restaurant in Murray Kentucky

Who: four-man flight crew from the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade
Why: one of the crew members said a hydraulic hose busted and they had to make the emergency landing. A six-foot high-pressure hydraulic hose - about the size of a straw - frayed and developed a leak. A second helicopter flew in repair parts. There were no injuries.

Routine Emergency Landing in Lake City

Cessna 182 Crashes After Dropping off Skydivers

Why: Plane lost power on approach to Danielson Airport, made an emergency landing, coasted to the edge of the runway before losing power and flipping over. The pilot had just dropped off a group of skydivers and was headed back

British Flight Grounded after Microwave Scare

Why:Black smoke filled the cabin when an onboard microwave oven caught fire. The jet was grounded for repairs. Technicians found an 'installation error' in the on board microwave. Some passengers returned to London via train; the passengers who weren't terrified out of their wits waited in the terminal for eight hours to fly back to London on a different plane.

Who: 76 passengers and 4 crew. Passengers included reporters on their way to Inuvik, NDP incumbent Dennis Bevington and Conservative candidate Brendan Bell.
Why:15 minutes after takeoff the pilot announced they were returning to the airport for personnel to take a look at the plane. The incident was a probable bird strike.

Alaska Airlines Better Safe Emergency Landing than Sorry

Why: When the indicator light showed a possible fire in the Auxillary Power Unit--a small jet engine at the back of the plane--the pilot returned to the airport. An infrared detector indicated that there was no fire.

Why: After experiencing unspecified technical problems, the plane dumped fuel and return to Gatwick. Witnesses report that the outer left engine (1) flamed out and was shut down; and/or there was a bird strike. Additionally, the landing gear appeared to be stuck in the down position. Virgin Airlines denies the incident is an emergency.

Barenaked Lady Crashes without a Scratch
