A Note to Our Readers

Dear Readers,
We make a special effort here to record the facts as we receive them. At times, there may be error but we do try to use our best judgement at the time of posting, and will be glad to amend any details which are proved incorrect. Furthermore, even though we do not here discuss the human cost, we realize that losing anyone in an air accident is insurmountable tragedy to individuals, families and communities. We do extend our heartfelt sympathy to those whose loss we record here. "...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for..." us all.

Experimental Plane Fatality in Broward County

What: Single-engine experimental Lancair aircraft using a 400-horsepower high-performance Corvette engine, taken from a car.
Where: North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. Landed on a fence separating North Perry Airport from nearby tennis courts.
When: 6 pm
Who: pilot Douglas A. Pohl
Why: There was engine trouble immediately after takeoff, then the plane crashed and burned. The plane has a history of a fuel delivery problem (c. about a month ago)

*Update Authorities believe the pilot was trying to return to the runway when the plane clipped a fence surrounding a nearby tennis court. A witness said "He was at 50 feet, wing stalled, started coming over to the left hand, the left side and after that he just kept coming on around. He was upside down and came straight down.""
