We make a special effort here to record the facts as we receive them. At times, there may be error but we do try to use our best judgement at the time of posting, and will be glad to amend any details which are proved incorrect. Furthermore, even though we do not here discuss the human cost, we realize that losing anyone in an air accident is insurmountable tragedy to individuals, families and communities. We do extend our heartfelt sympathy to those whose loss we record here. American Flight 442 Emergency Landing




What: American Flight 442 Boeing 757 from San Francisco to Miami
Where: Los Angeles
When: 2 pm
Who: Passengers were removed from the plane. (Number not available.)
Why:pilot reported smoke and the smell of fuel in the cockpit.

Plane was carrying hazardous material in its forward cargo area-- aircraft part from San Francisco to Miami for a repair, and such parts are classified as hazardous because they may contain residual oil, jet fuel or other chemicals.
